Introducing the Epson EcoTank ET-3850, the mid-range model in a new line of all-in-one printers (opens in a new tab) designed for the home office. It’s a 3-in-1 with an ADF (automatic document feeder) and refillable ink tanks instead of cartridges.
At around $00 (about £360, AU$680), it might seem expensive for a fairly basic all-in-one with no touchscreen and two can modes, until you realize it holds enough ink to print 1,000 blacks. And white sheets. white or 5200 colors.
This equates to around 70 cartridges and Epson’s packaged ink refills are very affordable. Up to 90 percent cheaper than Epson toner cartridges.
Epson EcoTank ET-3830 Printer Design and Shape
As an all-in-one printer, the ET-3850 is small at only 375 x 3
7 x 231 mm (W x D x H), with front-to-back printing and side-to-side document printing used.
Weighing only 6.7 kg before adding ink or paper, most adults can move this printer without assistance. It can be connected directly to a computer via USB, to a network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet LAN, so the printer can be placed in a small space.
All printing controls are located on the slanted front panel with a small 5x cm screen. It’s not a touchpad at this scale, and all menu options are selected from the control group to the right of it.
The top of the printer has an ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) for scanning or copying multiple pages. It accepts 30 pages and scans at a resolution of 1200 x 2
00 dpi (horizontal x vertical) at about five pages per minute.
The ink tank is located on the front right and the ink level is clearly visible from the outside. To add ink, you will need to lift the scanner lid and then lift a second cover to reveal the refill slot.

The Epson ET-3850 can be configured directly using the small menu screen, but the easiest way is to connect it to a computer with a USB cable. This is enough to fill all the tanks and fill one more for the black pigment. This amount of ink corresponds to 1000 pages of black-and-white printing (assuming 5% coverage) and 5200 pages of color printing.
The era of half-full carts and other customer-unfriendly decisions was not part of the EcoTank generation. Epson’s replacement ink is also relatively cheap considering the number of pages per bottle.
Shape and Specifications of Original Multipack Ink Bottles
Epson EcoTank ET-3830 Original Multipack Ink Bottle retails for £37.99 in the UK. The American ones are marked a little differently, because the ET-3850 sold there uses Epson 502 ink, which costs $
7.29. You can buy single color or black, with black for about $15 and each color for about $11.
At official ink prices, a set of black and color inks has a total of 7,500 black and 6,000 color pages. It manages 13,500 pages for £37.99, or $
7.29, or less than one third of a UK cent, or 0.35 US cent, per page.
Compared to standard cartridge printers which cost 5p or more, the Eco Tank is much cheaper to print and the starter pack costs an additional £50 or $60 as consumables.
Pricing and Availability
As I mentioned, Epson EcoTank ET-3830 printers hold a lot of ink and have low operating costs. To compensate, Epson makes this printer relatively expensive compared to standard cartridge designs with similar specifications. RRP from quickly dropped from £29.99 to £379.99 in the UK and you can easily find it for less. Buy from Amazon, Argos, Very, Box, Curry, Ebuyer, AO and Laptop Direct.
It is priced at $9.99 in the US and you can buy the printer through Epson, Amazon, Staples, and BestBuy.
In the UK, the Canon is about £299 cheaper, though claimed print speeds are far below the ET-3850’s, producing just 13ppm in black and 6.8ppm in color. Canon inks are slightly cheaper at around £12.50 for black and £9 for color.
While the G7020 is slightly heavier than the ET-3850, which reflects its better build quality, it also only comes with a one-year warranty and a 5,000-page-per-month duty cycle.
The Epson EcoTank ET-3850 costs significantly more to buy than its true competitors, but given the included ink and low running costs, it should be a better value.
It’s decent performance, with very fast bold black text and good quality scanning and copying. It’s a shame it’s not guaranteed, but if you’re looking for an affordable home office MFP, this is a great option.
Printing System
The Epson EcoTank ET-3850 uses the Epson PrecisionCore printing system which is known from many of Epson’s best Eco Tank models. With 100 bars for black and 128 bars for color, it delivers an impressive resolution of 800x1200dpi.
Epson describes this model as “double-sided,” meaning it can print on both sides of a sheet of paper. However, this feature comes with a caveat for the scanner, as it cannot take paper with both sides printed and copies it, since the ADF can only scan one side.
This can be resolved by scanning and printing to the other side and returning the print to restore the source. Or you can do two scan cycles and add pages to a single PDF file, then print it in one step using duplex printing.
Duplex printing is slow and uses slightly less intense colors, mostly to allow the ink on the first side to fully absorb before attacking the other, but this is a common problem with inkjet printers and nothing unexpected. Print quality from
very good overall, although it would have been better for reproducing photographs if Epson had not used black pigment in the work, as the result would be a dark image. But even for an inexpensive photocopier, the documents and copies it produces are sharp and clean.
Epson EcoTank ET-3830 Operating costs
First, the printer has enough pigment (black) and toner (color) to print 1,000 and 5,200 pages at 5% coverage without additional investment. If they run out, and some home users may have problems, you can buy individual colors and whole sets to fill the tank.
To clarify, this printer comes with the same ink that is sold in refill packs. But some of them were used in the early stages of the system, which reduced the amount available for printing. For subsequent refills, this backup has no effect because the printer has already been refilled.
