The Brother MFC-J1205W is, an all-in-one printer best suited for families and students. It uses Brother’s patented INKvestment Tank ink system, a hybrid of high capacity cartridges and super tank printers, for excellent page coverage or great print value.

It feels very well built, has easy access to paper jams and ink cartridges, and has a flatbed scanner that rises a bit to scan thicker objects.

Unfortunately, there’s no automatic document feeder, and it generally prints disappointingly slowly. While it produces decent-looking photos with reasonably accurate colors, there is some graininess and banding that is more noticeable in brighter areas.

PC Installation, easy to follow on screen instructions and handy quick installation guide with large images. This reference and troubleshooting guide shows LED indicators and presses buttons to check print quality (black and white or color).

Brother MFC-J1205W available in white only. There’s also a Walmart-exclusive Brother MFC-J1215W that has the same specs and we think it performs similarly, though we haven’t tested it.

However, the MFC-J1215W does not appear to have a warranty card in the box. At the time of writing, the Brother MFC-J1205W is only available in North America.

Brother standard capacity ink cartridges offer low lateral costs for the MFC-J1205w.

Text pages cost 3.5 cents per page and color pages 9.1 cents.
These running costs are significantly lower than the average of 10 cents (text) and 21.2 cents (color) when using conventional cartridges.

But even this brother wins big with lower costs per page for models using cartridges: 6.2 cents (text) and 15.7 cents (color).
All four Brother ink cartridges have an estimated capacity of 750 pages. A black ink cartridge costs $25.99, while color cartridges cost $15.9. High capacity cartridges are not offered.

The Brother Refresh program offers convenient automatic ordering of cartridges when ink is low. This is not a monthly subscription.

The MFC-J1205w is easy to install and the initial ink cartridges slide easily into place. After loading the paper, the printer automatically creates a print quality test page.

This first printout pulled three sheets of paper through the paper path. One of my later copies pulled two pages through the device, which could indicate a paper feed problem.

The Brother MFC-J1205W uses Brother’s patented INKvestment Tank ink system, which uses extended ink cartridges with internal ink tanks.
It prints significantly more pages than a traditional printer cartridge like the Epson WorkForce WF-2850. The ink cartridges on the right side are easily accessible and the printer does not need to be turned on to change cartridges.

Brother MFC-J1205W printer price is amazing. The INKvestment Tank system, which uses extended ink cartridges with internal ink tanks, produces a high volume of pages before the cartridges need to be replaced. Even then, the ink is not very expensive.

To save money, you can buy toner cartridges individually or as a set.
Remember that even if you only print in black, most inkjet printers still use a toner cartridge for maintenance, so you may need to replace it.
